Here is the full list of inmates at Ohama in the period after the Japanese surrender and before their evacuation to start their journeys home. Names given to POW camps in Japan changed on a regular basis so the camp at which Reg Newton spent the last year of the war is known by a range of titles but I will refer to here it as Ohama #9-B.

The original camp roster or nominal roll can be found on the Roger Mansell POW Research site, which is a fantastic resource. I have included some of the details from that original list here but not all. For instance, the British list shows addresses for next of kin and the localities from that is given in the ‘NOK Locality’  list which may not be the home locality of the POW in question. Also, there are names from the 1945 list which are difficult to read and so the details relating to age and locality are shown in the hope that that may assist those seeking to make a positive identification of an individual. 

Remember that this list was compiled in the month from 15 August to 15 September 1945. That means the list should be accurate insofar as it relates to that time-frame. If a POW died at Ohama prior to that, his name will or should not appear on this list. In the case of the Australians, that involved only three individuals [SX7619 L/Cpl J.M. Dunn, SX9755 Pte H. Nightingale and NX35512 Pte D.A.L. Craig], but for the British, who had been in the camp since 1942, that number could be expected to be considerably higher.

Not all of the same details given for the British are shown for the Australians but the service number is an excellent means of tracking down Australians through either the DVA site or the Ballarat POW site or both.

The notes column is included to explain any issues there may have been with reading information from the original typed liberation list or, in the case of the Australians, tracking down their service number. The original lists were not in alphabetical order which is why the number showing the individual’s order in the original list is important if you choose to scroll through the Mansell PDF. The best place to confirm the identity of a British POW is through the FEPOW site.

Hopefully a combination of these resources will enable interested visitors to identify individual POWs with greater certainty.
