List of Australians at Ohama

This list is based on a nominal roll covering Australians in Ohama in Japan at a camp referred to as Ohama #9-B. The list was prepared under Reg Newton’s supervision after the Japanese surrender and prior to the men’s movement back to Australia, i.e., between 15 August and 15 September 1945. The main source of this list is a copy of the original roster on the Roger Mansell website. Regimental numbers were added by searching nominal rolls of some units, the Ballarat POW Memorial website and the DVA Roll of Honour. In a few cases, I have not been able to provide a regimental number at all and in other cases I have not been able to provide one with confidence. Those cases are explained in the notes. Ohama was on the western tip of the island of Honshu, 16km west of Ube. In keeping with Japanese practice, the Ohama camp was known by different names at different times: Fukuoka Ube Branch Ohama, Fukuoka 9-B, Fukuoka 4-D, Hiroshima Camp 7-D and Hiroshima 9-B. Newton and his kumi arrived at Ohama on 8 September 1944. They were allowed a fortnight to recover from their horrific 70-day voyage in the Rashin Maru aka Byoki Maru before commencing work mining coal under Japan’s Inland Sea. A great place to look at information, maps and photos related to Ohama is this page from the 2/4th MG Bn website. There was a total of (approx.) 400 prisoners at Ohama: 3 Americans, 142 Britons, 254* Australians and one Dutchman. *I have asterisked that number of Australians because it is open to question: the list as given here has 248 Australians. So that will need to be a subject of further investigation. However, I will say that variations like that were not uncommon given the difficulty of accurate record-keeping at the time and Japanese obstruction of same.
